Bharatpur has founded by Suraj Mal in 1733 AD Today Bharatpur is well known for its famous water-bird sanctuary, Kololadeo Ghana National Park.

Places of Interest:

Fort : Once considered invincible, this fort was built Suraj Mal surrounded its massive double ramparts surrounded by tremendous moats. Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas are located within the fort.

Museum : Located within a fort, Museum has a rich collection of exquisite sculptures and some ancient inscriptions. Open from 10.00 to 17.00 hrs. Friday closed.

Kololadeo Ghana National Park : 2 km from Bharatpur, this water birds sanctuary covers 52 sq. km. In area of the extensive low lying marsh. Over 300 kinds of birds out of which more than 100 kinds are migrants, some of them from Siberia and China. Thorny babul trees, their tops clear of the water, hold the nest of the thousands of birds, which gather here. These birds include the painted stork, egret pelican, ibis, cormorant, darter, gray and white heron, cranes, purple moorhen. There are exotic migrants from Afghanistan, Central Asia, Tibet as well as Greyleg Geese from Siberia, Siberian Granes from the Arctic, and bareheaded Geese \from China.

Islands and well-forested hillocks break this bird sanctuary and jeepable embankments criss-cross the marshland, making for easy viewing. The best way to see the birds, however, is by boats punted through the rushes. Apart from birds, other species include pythons, porcupines, nilgai, spotted deer, hyenas, sambar and wild boar. The best season to visit this sanctuary is from October to February.
