JAISALMER
The fortress town of Jaisalmer is named after Rawal Jaisal who built it in 1156. There are trangled maze streets. Houses and mansions are exquisitely carved from golden colour sandstone. Jaisalmer is famed town of the Paniharis (water carrying women) of Rajasthan who trek the 2 km long distance in colourful garments and ornaments to fetch water from Gadiasar Tank.

Havelies :
Patwon Ki Haveli is the most elaborate and magnificent of all the Jaisalmer
havelies, one of its apartments is painted with beautiful murals. The building
is closed.
Salim Singh Ki Haveli was built about 300 years ago and is still partially
lived-in Salim Singh was Prime Minister when Jaisalmer was capital of a princely
state. Haveli has a beautifully arched roof with superb carved brackets in
the form of peacocks.
The 19th century Nathmal Ki Haveli was also a Prime Minister's house. The
left and right wings of the building were carved by brothers and are very
similar but not identical. The front door alone is a work of art.
Fort : Built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, the fort crowns the 80 meters high Trikuta
hill. The fort wall which have 99 bastions around the circumference. There
is seven-storey palace, just within first gate of the fort.
Jain temple : Built between12th to 15th century within the fort walls. They
are beautifully carved and dedicated to Rikhabdevji and Sambhavnathji. The
Gyan Bhandar, a library containing some extremely old manuscripts, is within
the temple complex. The temple is open from mourning to noon. There is also
a Shiva and Ganesh Temple within the fort.
Excursion
Amar sagar : 6 km from Jaisalmer, a beautifully carved Jain temple, is being
painstakingly restored.
Ludruva : 16 km from Jaisalmer is the deserted ruins of ancient capital, Ludruva.
The Jain temples, rebuilt in late 70's have ornate carved arches at the entrance
and a Kalpvruksha, the divine tree, within.
Mool Sagar & The Sam : 9 km from Jaisalmer, Mool Sagar a pleasant small
gardens and tank. The Sam sand dunes, is about 40 km from Jaisalmer. This
is the nearest point to Jaisalmer for the real Sahara like desert. A fabulous
sight of sand dunes where the night breeze traces ripples and waves in the
sand. The once in a lifetime experience of watching the setting sun while
riding a camel.
Pokhran : Magnificent Rajasthan fortress town is 100 km from Jaisalmer. Tangle
of narrow streets with balconies houses are decorated with Parrots, Elephants
and Peacocks.
Barmer : Barmer is 153 km from Jaisalmer. This deserted town is a center for
woodcarving, embroidery, block printing and other handicrafts.
