UDAIPUR
Nestled in a valley among the Lush hills of Aravallies, on the banks of Lake Pichola, Udaipur was founded in 1567 by Maharana Udai Singh. It has manifold attractions like enchanting lakes, marble palaces, luxurious gardens and old temples.
Udaipur is drenched in romance and provincial beauty of the Rajput times.
Fronted by the Aravali range the city is quite fascinating with palaces surrounded
by grand lakes. The city holds immense prospects for tourism and is well connected
through air, rail, and road to other important cities of India like Jaipur,
Delhi, and Mumbai.
Udaipur is the key place in Mewar dynasty, the Suryavanshis and most powerful
of the Rajputs. Mewar had a lineage of 67 generations ruling the region. Rana
Sangha and Rana Pratap were also the descendants of Mewar.
Places of Interest :
Pichola Lake : Pichola lake was enlarged by Maharaja Udai Singh, now stretches
4 km in length and 3 km wide. The city palace is on the east bank of the lake.
Jagniwas and Jag Mandir are the two islands in the lake.
Lake Palace (Jagniwas) : Jagniwas is the lake palace island, about 1.5 hectors
in size. The palace was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II in 1754 and covers
the whole island. Palace has been converted into a luxury hotel with courtyards,
fountains, gardens and a swimming pool.
The City Palace & Museum : Situated on the bank of Lake Pichola, this
huge city palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, a conglomeration
of buildings added by various Maharanas. Balconies, towers and cupolas (dom.)
surmount the palace.
The main part of palace is now preserved as a museum. The museum includes Mor Chowk with its beautiful mosaics of peacocks. The Manek or Ruby Mahal has glass and porcelain figures. Krishna Vilas Mahal has a remarkable collection of miniatures. More paintings can be seen in the Zanana Mahal. The Motti Chini Mahal is covered in ornamented tiles. Other exhibits even include the princely Rolls-Royces.

Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum : Foundation for the preservation of folk arts, this
museum has an interesting collection including dresses, dolls, ornaments,
puppets, masks folk musical instruments, folk deities and paintings. There
are regular puppet shown in the museum.

Saheliyon Ki Bari : Garden of the Maids of Honor is a small ornamental garden
with fountains, Kiosks, marble elephants and a delightful lotus pool. (Open
from 9.00 to 18.00 hrs. Entry Fee Rs.0.50/-

Pratap Memorial : Erected in the memory of the brave Maharana Pratap at Moti
Magari or Pear Hillock overlooking Fateh Sagar Lake. A bronze status of Maharana
Pratap is placed on top of this hill.
Fateh Sagar Lake : Set up by Maharana Fateh Singh, this elegant lake is wrapped
on three sides by hills and the Pratap memorial on the fourth side. Nehru
Park - an island garden is in the Fateh Sagar Lake. Boats are available to
row across to Nehru Park.
Gulab Bagh : Rose Garden : Aravalli Express - A children's mini train is a
delightful way to see the expansive garden. This garden also houses a library.
Excursions :
Eklingji (22-km) Eklingji temple (734 A. D.) is devoted to deity of Maharanas
of Mewar.
Nagda (23 km), (one km from Eklingji) The temple of Sas - Bahu (9th - 10th
century) has intricate carvings including, some erotic figures. Architecture
of Adbudji Jain Temple is interesting.
Haldighati : (40 km from Udaipur and 18 km from Eklingji ). The place where
historic battle between Maharana Pratap and the Mughal Emperor Akbar was fought
in 1576 A. D. There is a Chhatri dedicated to the faithful horse Chetak of
Maharana Pratap.
Nathdwara: (48 km from Udaipur and 8 km from Haldighati) This Vaishnava temple
(18th century ) is dedicated to Shri Nathji or Lord Krishna. Thousands of
pilgrims visit this shrine during Diwali, Holi and Janmashtami. ( Note : Foreigners
are not permitted inside temple).
Kankroli & Rajsamand Lake : (65 km from Udaipur and 17 km from Nathdwara).
Kankroli temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is a Vaishnava temple of
the Vallabhacharya sect. Near to Kankroli does Maharana Raj Singh construct
the Rajsmand Lake, created by the dam, in 1660. There are many ornamental
arches and chhatris adorn the embankment.
Kumbhalgarh Fort : (84 km from Udaipur) This is the second most important
fort in Rajasthan after the Fort of Chittaurgarh. It is accessible by jeep
from Kelwara through the seven great gates.
Jai Samand Lake : (48 km from Udaipur) this is the second largest artificial
lake in Asia. It was build by Maharana Jai Singh in the 17th century. Graceful
marble chhatris and the summer palaces for the King's favorite queens were
built on the embankment of the lake. Jai Samand wild life sanctuary near the
lake, has animals such as Panther, Wild Boar, Deer, four horned antelope,
Mongoose, and species of migratory birds.
Rishabhdeoji : (65 km from Udaipur and 22 km from Jai Samand Lake) this place
is also well known as Kasariyaji. This Jain temple is dedicated to 1st Jain
Tirthankar Adinath. It is situated on Udaipur-Ahmedabad Road. This temple
is architecturally elegant.
