The main river systems on the Pahang side of the park are the Tembeling, Tahan, Trenggan, Keniann and Relai-Aring-Lebir. Boat trips start from Park HQ at Kuala Tahan.
Kuala Koh is on the upper reaches of the Lebir River and its tributaries – the Badung, Pertang and Koh. Boat trips, mostly for fishing, can be arranged up these narrow rivers. On the Terengganu side of the park, boats are the only way to reach fill the various attractions such as caves, fishing locations, water falls and trails. These trips are made across Tasik Kenyir and along some of the tributaries. Permission needs to be obtained from Park HQ to enter some of the popular. fishing streams like Sungai Cacing.
Most fishing in Taman Negara is done with artificial lures on a reel although local fruits can be used during the fruiting season. The recommended fishing gear depends upon the kind of fish you’re after. The folkywing is a rough guideline:
2-5 kilogram (4-1 1 pound) lines for lampam, daun, rang, tapah bemban
6-9 kilogram (13-20 pound) for tengas, kelisa, sebarou, small kelah
9-12 kilogram (20-26 pound) for big kelah, seberou and toman
Keksa are one of the best sporting fish as they put up a great struggle and leap high out of the water. They prefer deep water, areas where there is debris and where the bank is indented.
While whitewater rafting is popular in many parts of the world, the rapids and cascades of Taman Negara are not that big and adventurous. However, they are mostly safe or all ages and to shoot the rapids does not take any special skill or equipment just sit back in a sampan and let the boatman do the work.
The jetboats from Tembeling up to Kuala Tahan are also thrilling - though the speed of the boats is restricted for safety and to avoid environmental disturbance.
