The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge we use in this itinerary is spread out along the uppermost, eastern rim of the Ngorongoro World Heritage Site and offers breathtaking views of the crater floor far below. The lodge has 92 suites, each is centrally heated, has a private lounge, a bedroom with two queen size beds, an en-suite bathroom and a private solarium which offers stunning views either down into the crater floor below or of the setting sun over the western horizon
Children of all ages are welcome and we can arrange both special meals at convenient times and baby sitters on request. The Lodge shop stocks a wide selection of curios, gift items & toiletries. A swimming pool is situated on the very edge of the crater itself and the water is bracing, even invigorating to say the least, at any time of year. The poolside decks are also the perfect place to unwind and relax while enjoying the views of the crater floor below or of the sunsets in the evenings.
In a landscape reminiscent of the volcanic upheavals of the Rift Valley, the world's largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera (collapsed cone of a volcano) covers 300 sq km (117 sq miles). In this restricted space, exceptional climatic conditions have favoured an explosion of animal life. Some 20,000 mammals are permanently in residence, as there are permanent water springs here there is no need to migrate as they do in the nearby Serengeti. On a full days game drive (with stop for delicious picnic lunch) we recently saw 4 black rhino, 23 lion, countless elephant, spotted hyena, golden jackal, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, an ostrich with chicks, a leopard, and plenty of zebra and antelope. Interestingly, there are no giraffe, topi or impala in the crater. On the rim of the crater guided walks are permitted and this provides contrasting habitat and the chance to see colobus monkeys.
