Serengeti - the name means "endless plains" in Maa, the language of the Masai people you will see as you travel by road in this region. It is Tanzania's largest and most famous National Park and comprises most of the Serengeti ecosystem which is the primary migration route of the wildebeest. It borders the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Kenya's Masai Mara and in this vast sanctuary there still exists the greatest and most spectacular concentration of game animals found anywhere in the world. The grassy savannah dominates the landscape and stretches away to infinity. The north of the park is more forested and its western borders rise progressively to within 8kms (5 miles) of Lake Victoria.
The wildebeest enter the Serengeti from the Masai Mara in November / December and are there in huge numbers through the calving months of February and March before circling back to the north towards May and June. Keep in mind when planning your safari that the migration movement is dependent upon the rain patterns.
The Serengeti is also famous for its huge lion population and is one of the best places on the continent to see them. It is not unusual to see 40 or more lion in a single day, including several superbly maned old males. Leopards are relatively numerous and are to bound found during the daytime resting in the trees along the Seronera River. Nobody, at whatever level of interest in ornithology, can fail to notice the wealth of bird life in the Serengeti. From the colourful such as the rollers and bee-eaters, to the huge and powerful scavengers such as the marabou storks and vultures through to the almost comic hornbills and the strange secretary birds, there is plenty to capture your attention.
